Mary Shelley, writer and English novelist is well known across the world for her Gothic novel Frankenstein, which has been reproduced many times and is as popular as ever today despite being written in 1818. Mary Shelley (nee Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin) was born in 1797 and died in 1851 after a rather troublesome and unusual life filled with tragedy, heartbreak and problems.
Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus as it has also been known is said to have been an idea started by a waking dream that Mary Shelley had while in Geneva in 1816 with the famous Lord Byron and other writers of the time. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has been the subject of many films over the years and is still a favourite among movie lovers across the globe.
Mary Shelley led an eventful life and wrote many pieces during her 57 years. Most of her works are now available to all in the public domain and her travels across Europe have been well documented.
