The Bath Film Festival

There’s a great opportunity for film buffs in Bath during November 10th – 19th, as the Bath Film Festival returns for another year.

Now in its 21st year, the festival has become a staple of the Bath events calendar. The festival is well known around the country and features a wide range of entertainment, including: previews, shorts, documentaries, animations, silent films with live music, Q&A sessions, workshops and one off events.

Some of the highlights of this year’s festival include the cult 80’s film, that’s on re-release, Cutter’s Way; the fantastic local Chippenham production, Bash Street, which will feature a Q&A with the director and some cast member afterwards and a celebration of the shows patron, Ken Loach, who is 75 this year.

The film festival really is a great opportunity to experience some of the best cinema available today, along with a range of classics, so if you’re in the area staying in Bath accommodation then why not pop down and treat yourself to an evening of captivating cinema?

The Mummers UnConvention in Bath

If you are in Bath from November 17th – 19th then you are in for a treat, as the ‘Mummers UnConvention’ is being held in the city.

The lesser known art of ‘Mumming’ is a form of traditional medieval drama with deep roots. The performances traditionally take place on the town streets and in the local pubs and they take the form of short sketches with comic themes; often featuring fights between ‘gallant heroes’ and ‘great evils’.

The Mummers UnConvention is set to be a world first event for professional Mummers, bringing groups of artists from around the globe together in Bath to perform and learn from each other.

It is the general public that will get the most from the event though, with a range of street performances and workshops taking place throughout the city. So if you are out and about around Bath this November, maybe you are down on one of the many Bath Spa breaks, then keep your eyes open for these unique performances.

Bath’s Beautiful Christmas Market

Every year the beautiful area between Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths is transformed into a brilliant Christmas market, and this year is no exception.

Set firmly as one of the highlights of the Bath events calendar, this pretty little market is set up in the very heart of the city. Over 120 individual wooden chalet style stalls will form this year’s market; selling everything from handmade crafts and unique jewellery pieces to locally produced food and drink. With so much packed in it’s also a great way to get much of the Christmas shopping done in one day, and the market’s unique atmosphere will really get you in the festive mood.

The market this year starts on November 24th and runs until December 4th, giving you plenty of time to enjoy a spot of Christmas shopping. If you’re not local to the area it’s also a great excuse to book a Bath bed and breakfast and make a weekend of it.

John Cleese Switches on Bath’s Christmas Lights

John Cleese is easily one of Bath’s most famous residents, and, on Thursday 17th November, he’ll be throwing the switch on Bath’s Christmas lights to begin the city’s festive season. The event also marks the start of late night shopping.

The evening begins at 5.00pm and will see Lascel Wood, Bath’s own X-Factor star, perform for the crowd. As the evening goes on, Largo Embargo, Shauna Hutchinson, Gabrielle Aplin, Laura Doggett and Georgie Vale will all grace the stage, along with a performance from Bath Rugby Club and the Stocking Tops, joining forces at last. If that wasn’t enough, famous choir leader Grenville Jones will also be there to get the whole crowd singing carols.

At 6.30pm, John Cleese will appear and Bath’s historic streets will be lit up with festive cheer. If you’d like to be there when Bath lights up, be sure to book a stay in our Bath accommodation for Thursday 17th November.
